Types of Scholarships

Institutional Aid / Merit Scholarships

Scholarships based on student performance (GPA, rank, etc.) and provided by the individual institution. Some require a separate application while others are automatic consideration. Deadlines typically align with Early Action/Early Decision dates. Look for specific information on each college's website. 

Local & National Scholarships

Provided by outside companies and organizations and require separate applications. Most can be applied toward any college/university. Find them in the scholarship bulletins and using the scholarship search engine websites below. Students should never pay to accesss scholarships or scharship search tools. See links at bottom of this page. 

Financial Aid

Based on family income. Determined using the FAFSA.

We recommend seniors create a spreadsheet to keep track of the scholarship opportunities for which they are a good fit (deadlines, application requirements, etc.). Then, they can systematically go through and submit the required application materials.

Shift_Ed Scholarship for Guilford County Residents

Registration is open from October 1 through June 1 for Guilford County Schools’ (GCS) seniors and graduates. Shift_ed Scholarships provide last-dollar tuition assistance to qualifying GCS graduates.

Spartan Education Scholars

There is also the UNC-Greensboro Teacher Education Fellows Program, Spartan Education Scholars, which is open to incoming freshmen (first-year students) and transfer students majoring in Deaf Education, Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Special Education, and Dual (Elementary and Special) Education.
